Sophie Watts

I am a 26 year old track sprint cyclist originally from Perth, WA but currently living in Brisbane, training with the Queensland Academy of Sport. My aspirations is to represent Australia at the highest level - the Olympics & World Championships.
Along with training as an elite athlete, I am also completing my PhD in Sport Science with a broad focus of understanding the important variables for training prescription and monitoring in rowing.

I have only been involved in the sport of track cycling for about 2 years, but I am already a nationally categorised athlete with the potential to reach the podium on an international stage in the next couple of years. However, being a full-time professional athlete along with my academic pursuits comes with many challenges, funding being a primary one. Support of the community would go a long way in helping me realise my dreams. The money from this campaign would help alleviate the cost of living, allowing me to focus more time on training and recovery so that I may perform at my very best.

Focus

When I was 4 years old I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. This presents unique challenges in every day life, let alone when combined with elite sport. As a child, I didn't know of any elite athletes with Type 1 diabetes. Through campaigns such as this, I hope to inspire and encourage anyone with diabetes or a chronic illness to push and challenge themselves. Whether that be sports, academic or lifestyle related - you don't know the strength you have inside until you push outside your comfort zone.

Health Focus

I have always been a sporty and healthy person, growing up participating in athletics and surf lifesaving. I strive to be the best version of myself, which features being consistent, resilient, and a kind and respectful person. In 2021, these values led me to become Australian Beach Sprint Champion. Shortly after this I was talent identified for the sport of sprint track cycling. Starting a new sport at the age of 24 was daunting, but I dreamt big and decided to give it a go. Two years down the track I am an AusCycling Podium Potential athlete, aiming to make my international debut next year. I am 100% invested in pursuing my dreams and every bit of support and investment from the community increases my likelihood of success.
